Halloween Reads to Consider Hiding From!

I wanted to create a list of books that readers could consider getting for a great Halloween themed night of reading.  After starting research on the list, I thought it might be smarter to hide from these spooky tomes than to actually read them.  If you are like me, though, you will curl up, cover yourself with a protective blanket or pillow, (it's been proven scientifically that when watching a scary movie, hiding behind a blanket or pillow will protect you from the horrors onscreen!!!) and jump right in.  So I caution all readers to beware and enter each book at your own peril...

Review: The Prodigal by Michael Hurley

17929231The Prodigal by Michael Hurley

Source: Review Copy
Genre: Literary Fiction
Format: Paperback

From the Publisher...

Pride, betrayal, forgiveness . . . and the eternal sea. The Prodigal tells the mystical tale of four people on Ocracoke Island whose destiny is tied to an abandoned schooner, thought to have been lost at sea more than a century ago, that one day drifts ashore. Marcus O’Reilly, a renegade Catholic priest, must confront his inner demons. Ibrahim Joseph, a Bahamian fugitive, must face his past. Aidan Sharpe, a fallen lawyer, struggles with self-doubt and his growing affection for Molly McGregor, a fearless towboat captain who cannot find the courage to love. They will all be drawn into a 2,000-year-old mystery that unfolds with the reappearance of the ship.

From Me...

I would definitely recommend this book, though I can't give it a five star review. This book has a really great story.  The beginning remind me so much of John Grisham.  A successful lawyer who loses everything and must restart his career and fins himself.  Once the ship is introduced to the story, it becomes completely and wonderfully original.

Finding the Right Girl
A Nice GUY to Love Spin-off
By: Violet Duke
Release Blast October 28th, 2013

From the New York Times & USA Today bestselling author who brought you the Nice Girl to Love trilogy, comes A Nice GUY to Love spin-off...

Brian Sullivan has been in love twice in his lifetime. He lost his first love to early-onset Huntington’s, and he lost the other more recently…to his brother. And somehow, his heart has managed to heal itself after both. Amazingly, without therapy. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t gotten a bit more cautious, however. Lately, Brian’s been thinking that maybe his brother’s now retired nothing-but-flings rule isn’t such a bad idea after all. Unfortunately, as the unofficial nice guy poster boy, Brian isn’t exactly versed in the fine art of flings. So he looks to the outrageously ‘unique,’ inexplicably enigmatic, provokingly button-pushing Tessa Daniels for a crash course.

There’s absolutely no way he’s falling in love with this one...right?

Harry Potter Halftime

This is not strictly about books, but is so much fun that I have to share.  Last night the Ohio State University Marching Band performed a halftime show that is truly incredible, and that's saying something since they made Michael Jackson moonwalk last week.  Anyway, the show is based on movie theme music and the Harry Potter section will blow you away!

After Dead by Charlaine Harris

After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse

Below, you can find the complete synopsis of this "book," but I have some things I want to say.  First of all, I have read every book in this series. I fell in love with this story and how original it all felt to me.  I liked Sookie a lot, even if she was a little ditzy, but I figured she was naive in the beginning and would mature and become more worldly as the series continued.  I kept reading the books because of their action, mystery and impatiently waiting for Sookie and Eric to get together.  Then they did.

At some point in the middle of the series, once Sookie got with Eric, I think the author started resenting the series.  I think she knew she had to keep writing them, but I'm not sure she wanted to anymore.  She ruined the Sookie and Eric.  Eric's character was an unrecognizable coward in the last book.  I could go on and on about the crap this series became, but I want to stay focused.  I wrote an entire rant article, check it out for more of my crazy.

Anyway, I was relieved when the story ended simply because I wanted to know what happened but was glad to put myself out of my misery.  Then I find this. I think there is a reason that every author doesn't end their series with coda. It's not a novel, and isn't a new installment in the series, yet it will sell for the same price without having to put the effort into actually writing another book. Just write blurbs about all of the characters and where they end up after repeatedly telling everyone that you are done with the series because you have no ideas. As a book buyer and avid fan, this annoys me to no end.  I'm really starting to buy into the theory that she stopped writing the books because people liked the tv show better. *breathes*

So now that I've got that off of my chest, I want to know if anyone else feels this way?  Am I on an island?

What I'm Reading This Week (10/8/13)

I didn't quite make it through last week's reading list, stupid football season.  But I am not deterred, I will forge ahead. In addition to finishing those books, I am skipping to the front of the line a book that I have been waiting on:

18049965Forged in Dreams and Magick by Kat Bastion: The award-winning debut in the Highland Legend Series:

Blog This New CoverPraise for Blog This "From the very first chapter, Blog This grabs your gut and your heart with surprising action and touching moments. Cami Checketts blends suspense, humor, and good clean romance into a story that will stick with you." ~Daniel Coleman, Author of Gifts and Consequences "LOVED it. LOVED it. LOVED it. Have read all of Cami’s books but Blog This is on the top of my list. Read it twice and enjoyed it just as much as the first time I read it. Just when you think you know what is going to happen you’re led into a different direction. Had a hard time putting the book down and was anxious to see how it was going to end." ~Elsa Akinason   Excerpt Natasha sighed. “You don’t need to stay until Detective Bentley comes.” His eyebrows rose. “You want to be alone with the detective?” Natasha grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water from the door of the fridge. “I just don’t want Jace and Lily to wait too long.” She turned to face him, taking a sip of the cold water. Tony held her gaze with his warm stare and edged a step closer. “I wanted to make sure that you’re okay.” “I’m fine.” Natasha clutched the glass in her palm. “I can take care of myself.” Why was she lying to him? She tried to shoo him away, when she really wanted to beg him to stay until Alex was apprehended and maybe even after that. Tony set the water bottles on the counter. “Oh, I don’t doubt you can take care of yourself, but maybe it’s time to let someone else help.” He took two more steps toward her. She could smell his PS cologne. She’d given him a bottle the first year they were married and told him it was her favorite scent. The fragrance brought back tender memories she wanted to displace and plugging her nose right now might be a little awkward. Natasha raised the glass to her lips to try to block the tempting aroma and create some distance between them. Why was Tony still wearing the same brand? “What if I want to take care of you?” Tony asked. Sounds wonderful. She took a long drink, but it didn’t quench the heat in her face. Tony took the glass from her fingers and set it on the counter. “What if I want to take care of you?” he repeated quietly. He gently took hold of her palm and studied her face for the correct answer. “I think you’re too late,” Natasha whispered, studying his pressed cotton shirt to avoid his handsome face. Her hand tingled. How could he still affect her like this? Tony tilted her chin up with his free hand. “Look in my eyes and say that again.”

Sequel to The Shining

So my nerdy bookish event this week is slightly October/Halloween themed.  Hopefully you have heard about this, but if not, let me hook you up!

Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.
Doctor SleepOn highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.
Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”
Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

6487308Fallen by Lauren Kate

From the Publisher...

Source: Purchased from Amazon
Genre: Young Adult

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce – he goes out of his way to make that very clear. But she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Luce has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, FALLEN is a page-turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

From Me...

I think this is a book you will either love or hate.  After finishing, I went to just to see how others felt and I was exactly right.  So many people hated the book giving it one star, but true young adult, angsty teen, unrequited love readers loved this book.  For this reason, I am feeling a bit disjointed about this book.  Normally I am pretty firm in my opinion, but I cannot create a cohesive viewpoint.  Therefore, I am letting my multiple personalities run wild and giving you a review in two parts.  I am giving this book an average of 3 eiffel towers, but you have to see how this happened.
